Home Renovations: Important Checklist that you can’t Miss

Home renovation is not a small project. You have to keep an eye on every little thing that will guide you towards an effective remodeling. This is a time consuming and stressful task, but eventually it will save a lot of energy and money. This project requires hunting down a good contractor, getting construction permission, securing the finance and many more.

Below is an important checklist of some important things that you should not miss:

  1. Create a wish list

You can start the renovation plan by making a list of what you want and what you need. Put them in separate columns of the list. It will help to choose priorities when you will face tough choices down the line. For example, right now you need a second bathroom upstairs but the stainless steel Viking range is not that necessary.

  • Start to make a list of things that you will need such as- lighting, flooring materials, appliances along with their brand names. It will keep you and your general contractor updated about the probable costs and upcoming works. Try to write them in details.
  • Sketch the whole plan and designs on a paper before discussing with the general contractor, it will save time.

Specify your budget

Before hiring a contractor or an architect, make a rough calculation of your total budget. It will save the time of negotiation and will make you more honest. It is recommended to build some padding (at least 10%) into your number for the uh-ohs and might-as-wells that are sometimes unavoidable.

When your contractor prefers any product for the project, you should ask him the cost of buying and installing it. Do not let him use whatever you want because it may cross your budget. Expenses for dining out or booking a hotel should be considered in case the construction work temporarily makes your home unlivable.

  • It is wise to set aside 10-15% more than what you estimated the total cost.

Create a schedule

You may have a lot of events in the upcoming months. So, before starting the work, think of the events first. For example, if you want to install a new roof you must finish it before the winter looms. Similarly, destruction of any part of the home will be nonsense if you are thinking of hosting a family reunion.

Start searching for a contractor

Before hiring a contractor for starting the project, ask experienced people in this field. Listen to their every word, good and bad. You can also visit the websites such as- National Association of Remodelers (nari.org) or the National Association of Home Builders (nahb.org). The professionals associated with these organizations can guide you effectively.

Important questions to ask the contractor include:

  • What warranty do you offer, and what does it cover?
  • May I see a copy of your business license?
  • Are you going to acquire the correct permits for the job or will I?
  • Examine the fine print of the contract

Complete household arrangements

If you are done with all the plans and schedule of work, it is time to make additional plans. It includes reserving storage space for furnishings or booking a hotel in case the water supply is turned off.

Carve out an oasis for yourself

As home renovation is a time-consuming project, you might feel tired of everything and want a place where you can rest peacefully. So, keep a room untouched from chaos and equip it with things that will release your stress (e.g. A DVD player, newspaper, yoga mat, ear plugs etc.)

Finally, I would like to say that if you follow these checklists, you execute your home renovation project smoothly. Without creating a checklist, you won’t be nowhere. So, make a checklist and follow it properly!
